Author to speak on the science and history of salt

A French scholar who sees the world in a grain of salt will speak at the University of New Hampshire on Monday, October 22. Pierre Laszlo, author of Salt: Grain of Life (Columbia University Press), will discuss the science, history, and cultural importance of salt.

Salt has inspired exploration, taxation, migration, and numerous works of art, including the extensive carvings in a salt mine near Krakow, Poland. Without salt, Laszlo’s book reminds readers, there would be no blood, sweat, tears–or vinyl.

A chemist and visiting professor at Cornell University, Laszlo has also taught at Princeton and written numerous scholarly works, as well as essays popularizing science. Many of his writings, like Salt: Grain of Life, have drawn on multiple fields of study.

Laszlo’s talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22, in room 209B of DeMeritt Hall. The event is sponsored by the UNH College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the UNH Center for the Humanities.
