Salt Notes : North American salines
The Salina Basin underlies the States bordering the Great Lakes: Illinois,
Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, New York, West Virginia, Tennessee and
Virginia.
Numerous placenames allude to the existence of former salines. Examples
include, in Kentucky, Blue Licks and Big Bone Lick; in West Verginia, Big
Buffalo Lick; and French Lick, in Tennessee.
